SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Priya and Sanjay Chawla, owners of Buy Rite Wine & Liquor (formerly A & D Liquors) recently donated $1,000 to the Founders Park Conservancy.

The donation, which was presented to Chris Black, Chair of the Conservancy, and Andrew Kit of the Academy Heights Neighborhood Association, at the South Orange Board of Trustees meeting, is for continued beautification and maintenance of the park, which is located on Valley Street in the Academy Heights neighborhood.

The Chawlas explained at the Board of Trustees meeting that the donation represented $5 from the sale of each bottle of a special Kentucky Bourbon that they sell at Buy Rite. The donation was part of the grand opening celebration for their new location, said the Chawlas, adding that they appreciate the chance to give back to the community because they love South Orange and being able to support the town and their customers.

Black gave a short history of Founders Park, including that it was the original town cemetery until about 1825, when it became vacant and unused into the 1970s. The park today has a memorial with the names of those interred, as well as a playground, garden, and green space.

Sanjay stated that he hopes this is just the first of future donations to the park.

South Orange Village President Sheena Collum and South Orange Trustee Deborah Davis Ford both thanked the Chawlas for their generosity and commitment to both the Academy Heights neighborhood and to South Orange.
