NEWARK, NJ — If you have been marching for racial justice during the past few weeks, you may want to get tested for coronavirus.

"I would recommend that anyone who's been in close contact with others for a long period of time be tested," said Scott Egelberg, South Orange Office of Emergency Management Coordinator.

Marchers should not hesitate because of the test shortages of March and April. "Right now testing is widely available, so you're not taking it away from someone else" by getting tested, Egelberg added. While acknowledging there are no clear guidelines for how often one should be tested, Egelberg said it's always best to get the test if you feel any symptoms.

South Orange Village has 98 COVID-19 positive test cases as of this morning, according to Egelberg. The stat was higher in the daily email briefing by the Essex County Office of Information, but discrepancies are found often in county/township numbers due to local health departments reassigning the town of residence of a testee after confirming their address. Maplewood saw a one-case decline in today's county numbers.

Further information may be read at EssexCovid.org, which also has a schedule of Essex County coronavirus testing sites. The South Orange COVID-19 portal is southorangecovid19.com, and for Maplewood, it's twp.maplewood.nj.us/covid19.

  • Social distancing, hand hygiene, and other steps to prevent infection must be followed at all times in all municipalities regardless of the number of cases.
  • The number of infected individuals in any municipality is likely to be much greater than indicated as this data ONLY includes persons who have been tested and whose lab results have been reported in the State’s data system.
  • This data will not match any other report since cases are continually entering the system and local health departments may reassign place of residence as appropriate during their investigations.
