MAPLEWOOD, NJ - With recent attention on possible unsanitary conditions at the bathrooms at local South Orange and Maplewood schools, there is one school where the bathrooms have received notice for how good they look: the girls bathroom at Jefferson Elementary School.

As the school year began, Jackie Spoerel and her family, with the support of the PTA, worked Labor Day weekend to spruce up the girls bathroom with new paint and inspiring sayings which they chose themselves like "she believed she could so she did,'' and "do the right thing... even if no one is looking."

“It’s cool that Jackie and her family have added other elements for the kids to be inspired,” said Amy Straub, Jefferson School PTA President, who spearheaded the effort.

In addition to improvements at the girls’ bathroom, another Jefferson parent, Ani Levy, refreshed the adult bathroom with inspirational quotes, a concierge bin for essentials, and a new curtain.

"We are very grateful for their work," shared Anna Liza Montenegro, VP of Communications for the Jefferson School PTA.

Montenegro added that the remodeled girls bathroom has been a success, and the PTA hopes to similarly renovate the boys bathroom as well.
