NEWARK, NJ — The detention hearing for Benjamin Avrut, arrested for killing his mother in her South Orange Avenue home, has been postponed.

The hearing, originally set for today, is now scheduled for Jan. 19.

Katherine Carter, public information officer for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, told TAPinto SOMA that the Maplewood resident will remain at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark until then.

At the detention hearing, an assistant prosecutor will argue that he should remain in custody until he goes to trial, Carter said via email. “The defense, of course, would also have an opportunity to argue its position. The judge will hear from both sides and make a determination,” she added.
