NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - A vehicle traveling on Union Avenue was struck by the NJ Transit Gladstone Line train at the intersection of Union and Rose avenues in New Providence on Thursday evening around 6 p.m. after leaving the Murray Hill Station.

The female driver was brought to Morristown Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to reports by NJTPD.  The identity of the woman has not been released.

The Gladstone Branch is suspended in both directions and Union Avenue is closed in both directions while accident is under investigation. NJTransit PD are on scene and assisting NPPD with the investigation. TAPinto New Providence will update as more information becomes available.

The snowstorm that hit the area midday Thursday has dropped seven inches or more of snow and a wintry mix. Cars crawled, taking hours for commuters to get home on the treacherous roadways.

Several accidents were reported as drivers confronted the slick roads. There were reports of multiple car fires, cars off roadways and abandoned cars. Various roads were reported as closed after roadways were blocked by accidents and the road conditions were too dangerous to travel.
