MAPLEWOOD, NJ — A Union man has been arrested for the Nov. 9 face to face robbery in the Hilton neighborhood of Maplewood. John Richemond, 19, was arrested on Nov. 12 and has been charged with second-degree robbery and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.
The robbery, which happened on Princeton St., was scheduled as a meet-up for a Mahwah resident to purchase an iPhone that had been listed on Craigslist. Instead, the perpetrator produced a handgun and took the $1900 cash the 55-year-old man was carrying. The man was left uninjured.
Richemond "was taken into custody by Union Police Department because they had a warrant for his arrest, also for a robbery,” said Detective Lieutenant Niheema Malloy of the Maplewood Police Department. Subsequent to his arrest he was transported to Union County Correctional Facility.
Det. Lt. Malloy had this advice for people making purchases from an unknown seller: “We encourage people when they purchase things online to do so in a public location. If they feel comfortable they can do so at the police department lobby versus going to areas that are unfamiliar.”
