MAPLEWOOD, NJ – Another sergeant position could be added to the Maplewood Police Department.
The Maplewood Township Committee introduced an ordinance that would add a fulltime sergeant to the force, bringing the total number of sergeants to 11.
The total number of officers in the Maplewood Police Department would remain at 63 if the ordnance is approved. The department would then include 11 sergeants and the two captain and four lieutenant positions that already exist on the force. The eleventh sergeant position would be created by promoting an officer to sergeant.
“The addition of another sergeant will provide more opportunities for officers to become supervisors and will increase performance and morale and will provide additional coverage within the police department,” Maplewood Police Chief Jimmy DeVaul told TAPinto SOMA on Tuesday.
DeVaul didn’t have salary information for the position.
The township committee is expected to vote on the new sergeant position during its next meeting on July 16.
