MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The detention hearing for Joseph D. Porter, the 27-year-old man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and a well-known comedy club owner to death to Wednesday, Aug. 14.
According to court documents, Porter stabbed Karen Bermudez-Rodriguez, 26, and David Kimowitz, 40, of Maplewood in the early morning hours of Aug. 3 after he exchanged text messages with Bermudez-Rodriguez about their relationship.
Maplewood Police found Kimowitz dead at his home on Walton Road. Bermudez-Rodriguez was found lying in the street injured outside of a neighboring home. She was transported to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.
Porter was arrested Sunday in connection with the double homicide and charged with two counts of murder, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and criminal restraint.
His detention hearing is scheduled for Aug. 14, at 9 a.m., in the Essex County Veterans Court House before Judge Nancy Sivilli.
