SOUTH ORANGE AND MAPLEWOOD, NJ - With a winter storm warning issued from the National Weather Service (NWS) from 10 p.m., Tuesday night continuing through 4 a.m. on Thursday morning, events are being canceled and postponed in anticipation of heavy snow. The NWS is predicting 6 to 12 inches of snow accumulation and for travel to be "very difficult to impossible, including during the evening commute on Wedneday."

  • South Orange Maplewood School District:
    • South Orange Maplewood School District and all of its schools will be closed Wednesday, details here.
    • College Fair at Columbia High School scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled, details here.
  • Township of Maplewood:

    • There will be no parking at the train station. This area must be kept clear for emergency vehicles and snow removing operations.

    • The Community Center in DeHart Park will open as a heating center and shelter. The Center, 120 Burnett Avenue, will open at 6 a.m. on Wednesday and stay open as long as needed. If you lose power and need a place to work or charge your electronic devices, you can use the Center. The Center’s phone number is 973-763-5287.

  • Maplewood Police:

    • There will be no overnight parking permitted in the Township of Maplewood due to the impending snow storm and State of Emergency. All vehicles are expected to be removed from the roadway prior to midnight. This will help ensure the ability for proper snow removal and safe passage for emergency vehicles. 

    • Maplewood Jitney service is cancelled on Wednesday

  • Village of South Orange:

    • Please move all vehicles from the road way to allow for the Department of Public Works (DPW) to clear the roads.  

    • As of March 7, 2018 at 12:00 a.m. all on street parking is prohibited and travel is highly discouraged. If you have an on street parking permit, please move your vehicle to the nearest municipal lot (preferred lot during a snow event is the Third and Valley Garage levels 4 and 5)

  • South Orange Parking Authority (SOPA):

    • The SOPA office will be closed on Wednesday though Jitney service will be running on a regular schedule. 

    • No senior bus service on Wednesday.

  • Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr.:

    • Due to the snow storm in the forecast, all parks will be closing on Wednesday at 9 a.m..

    • The Night Owl and Wave are cancelled beginning Tuesday night.

    • Visitation at the Essex County Correctional Facility is cancelled on Wednesday.

  • New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy

    • Governor Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency for the entire state beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
