SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — When the South Orange Fire Department received a generous gift of medical masks to supplement their personal protective equipment, they turned around and shared the wealth. After all, the masks are worth their weight in gold right now.

Dr. Kaixuan Liu of Atlantic Spine Center donated 4,500 masks to SOFD. And in turn, the department divided them nearly equally between the West Orange Office of Emergency Management in West Orange, where Liu’s office is located; Livingston Fire Department, as that is Liu’s hometown; and the other first responders in South Orange, the South Orange Rescue Squad and the South Orange Police Department.

“It was a beautiful gesture on their part,” said Fire Fighter Jimmy Jennings, who has been with SOFD for 17 years. Jenning’s wife, Aylin, works at Atlantic Spine Center.

Jennings offered the department’s gratitude and appreciation to Liu and his office. “It meant a lot that someone took the time to make sure we’re safe. Everyone needs the PPE.”
