SPRINGFIELD, NJ - More than two yeas of planning paid off for Wawa in their effort to build a convenience store with six gas pumps, as its application was approved at Wednesday's Springfield Planning Board meeting.

A key component of the approval process was Wawa’s willingness to pay for the cost of a traffic light on the corner of Cleveland Place and Morris Avenue. After numerous meetings with the State Department of Transportation, approval of the light is expected within the month.

Wawa acquired six properties from the corner of Cleveland Place and Morris Avenue east. The parcels will be consolidated to make a parcel of 1.6 acres. The almost six thousand square foot store with six fueling islands plans to be open 24 hours a day and have an estimated 10 to 12 employees on site during the busy daytime hours.

During the discussion of the application, Board members were questioning the number of signs that were requested and the hours of delivery. Concessions were made by the applicant on signage, and delivery hours were set to be up until 10 p.m. and no earlier than 6 a.m..

The only member of the public to approach the Board was Wally Peterson who owns three residential properties on Morris Turnpike abutting the Wawa location. There was agreement to put up an eight foot fence that would help shield those properties from headlights and sound.

The Board voted to approve the application with one dissent. Mayor Diane Stampoulos voted against the application.
