MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Columbia broke a tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to a 5-4 softball victory over Edison in the first round of the Section 2, Group 4 state tournament on Thursday.

Samantha Carlton singled twice and drove in two runs for Columbia (13-9), which trailed, 4-1, in the middle of the fourth inning. Claire Salinardo went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI and Olivia Miller and Sydney Resnick each came through with RBI singles for the Cougars.

Winning pitcher Sydney Waldon pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and six walks. She pitched shutout ball over the final three innings.
