MAPLEWOOD, NJ 07040 - Three current and past Columbia High School coaches have been recognized as being tops in their field. In a NJ.com article, the coaches from CHS were recognized as part of the best 99 athletic coaches New Jersey has ever seen.
Daryl White, current CHS boys’ fencing head coach, came in at number 95. He has nine state titles under his belt, among other accomplishments with the team.
Johanna Wright, ranked at number 70, is a current BOE member and was coach of the Columbia Women’s Basketball team from 1983 to 2012; she has more than 600 victories and was a three-time Star-Ledger state coach of the year.
The late Gene Chyzowych, who was “a local and national soccer pioneer,” the article says, cracked the top 25, listed as ranking 24th. He “led Columbia to 757 victories, four state titles, 16 sectional championships, 13 Essex County Tournament titles and 24 conference crowns. He retired as third nationally in all-time boys soccer coaching wins.”
