ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Two Columbia High School wrestlers fought their way down to Atlantic City for the 2019 NJSIAA Individual Wrestling Championships.
Seniors Naquan Tory (106 pounds) and Blake McGowan (170 pounds) earned their spot in the field by placing in the top 4 of their weight class in last week’s Region 3 tournament.
Tory came out of the gate firing on all cylinders in his first round match Thursday night, defeating West Morris/Mendham’s Jack Bertha by a 5-1 decision.
However, shortly thereafter, Tory dropped a 12-2 major decision to Pope John XXIII’s Shane Percelay, ending his shot at the state title and sending him to the consolation bracket.
Facing Howell’s Ethan Liptzin in the second wrestleback round, Tory was pinned in the second period to close out his tournament.
Tory ended his season with a 34-6 record.
Things didn’t go much better for McGowan. The 170 pound senior lost his opening round match to Robbinsville’s Garrett Bilgrav in an opening minute pin.
Then, after defeating Verona’s Nick Riggio in the first wrestleback round, McGowan dropped a 2-0 decision to Delaware Valley’s Shawne Ramsby to end his senior season.
McGowan finished the year with a 35-7 record.
