SOMERS, N.Y. – Somers senior Joe Grippo is a starting guard and team captain on the boys basketball team. He was also a captain and key defender on the boys soccer team, which won the Section 1 Class A title in 2018 and was a section runner-up this past season.
How old were you when you started playing basketball and soccer and how did you get started in each sport?
I began playing soccer at AYSO when I was 5 years old. Along with that, I started playing basketball at in-town games when I was 7 years old.
What are the team’s goals for this basketball season?
As a team, we want to keep defending at a high level. A long-term goal the team has is to finish first in our league.
As a senior on the basketball team, how much do you value being a leader?
I value being a leader highly. Being a senior captain on both of the varsity soccer and basketball teams is very important to me.
What is your favorite team activity, pregame or postgame ritual that you share with your teammates?
I’ve always enjoyed team dinners. Eating good food and hanging out with my teammates is so much fun.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
My father has definitely been the biggest role model in my life. What I’ve learned from him is to work hard at everything I do.
Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?
My favorite sport to watch isn’t soccer or basketball; it’s football.
Will you continue to play soccer or basketball in college? If so, where are you going and why did you pick that school?
I won’t be playing college sports in the future, but I will continue to participate in intramural and club level basketball and soccer.
Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what and why?
I want to study engineering in college, because I enjoy math and science, and I’m confident that I will achieve success in that field.
What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a game?
Hip hop/rap music. Lil Tjay always gets me pumped up.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
Super speed because I could run to the Bahamas and warm up whenever I want to.
If you could pick one place to visit on vacation that you’ve never been to, where would you go and why?
I would go to Bora Bora because the weather there is perfect and I’ll get the chance to sleep in a hut that is on the water.
What is your favorite food to eat before or after a game?
My favorite food to eat before a game is a chicken cutlet sandwich.

For a young athlete growing up in Somers, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the basketball and soccer programs and why should they go out for the team?
Being a part of the soccer and basketball programs will make you feel like you are a part of one big family of athletes. Playing basketball and soccer in Somers is very enjoyable. Young athletes should definitely go out for those teams.
