SOMERS, N.Y. - On Wednesday, April 25, the Somers High School Math Honor Society hosted the St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon at Somers Intermediate School. St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon is a math-enrichment fundraiser with a real-world purpose. It helps students practice math skills while providing the opportunity to help kids just like them.
At the Math-A-Thon, 40 SIS students completed a booklet of math problems and participated in activities such as marshmallow building, Sudoku, Rubik’s Cube, Battleship and a math scavenger hunt, all run by SHS Math Honor Society students and their faculty adviser, Denise Milmerstadt.
Students collected donations from sponsors who either pledged a pre-determined amount per math problem that a student completed or pledged a flat amount.
With some last-minute donations the day after the event, Somers students raised a total of $5,068 for St. Jude’s.
