SOMERS, N.Y. - Students from the Somers High School drama club have come together for what will be the second-ever “Disney in Concert” fundraiser.

The student-run show is being put on by a cast and crew of 30 students impassioned by the goal of raising money for their club’s traditional fall and spring productions.

The show began last year when then-drama club president Daniel Kushner came up with the idea of performing a collection of Disney songs to promote the spring production of “The Little Mermaid.” This year, his younger sister, junior Michelle Kushner, is among the committee of organizers who are carrying on the tradition. The other students running the event are Alexandra Curnyn and Emily Denier, both seniors who will be performing in the show; senior Alexa Olinto; and stage manager Sarah Goldberg, also a senior.

Olinto portrayed Anna from “Frozen” in last year’s production and said it was really fun hosting an event for families with kids of all ages. “Some of the little kids wanted to take a picture with Anna,” she said.

Unique to the show is the invitation for younger kids to dress up as their favorite Disney character when they come to see the show. The entry fee will be waived for students in costume, as it was last year. Kushner and Olinto remember a little boy who arrived dressed as a hot dog the previous year. Despite not being dressed as a Disney character, his fee was waived to reward his enthusiasm.

“It’s not a formal event,” Kushner said. “It’s more kid-oriented.”

This year’s production will take place at Somers High School from 6:30–8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. Tickets are $5 for children (unless they’re in costume), $8 for students and seniors and $10 for adults. For families, the ticket price is capped at $15. All will be available at the door. There will be two emcees to move the night along and introduce the musical numbers, which will be a mix of recent Disney films and classics. These will include, but are not, limited to “Frozen,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Beauty and the Beast.”“The feel of this production is different from other Disney productions because it’s student-run,” Olinto said. “It’s nice to see teenagers doing things they wouldn’t normally do like running a community event.”

Why Do Kids Hate Math?

Dear Dr. Linda,

I am in second grade and have a problem about math. My teacher just keeps giving me homework and it’s driving me crazy. Because she keeps giving it to me on weekends and spring and summer breaks. And it’s only one level and it’s too hard. But the other people who have special needs get to be moved into a higher or lower group and they learn even more because ...

‘Sister Act’: A Musical Like Nun Other

Of all the Broadway musicals I’ve seen over the years at Westchester Broadway Theatre, only a handful have elicited the noisily enthusiastic audience response I observed at the recent opening night of “Sister Act.”

There were outbursts of applause in the middle of some numbers, and several clever turns of phrase sprinkled in the dialogue landed squarely, to the delight of big ...

Cleaning the Empty Nest

Part of the shock of being a part-time empty nester is when the kids come back to visit and I have to watch my house transform overnight from a pristine haven of OCD goodness to a place that looks like an explosion happened at Forever 21.

After my kids moved mostly out, I put away whatever tchotchkes they chose to leave behind and then I put on a hazmat suit and cleaned their rooms until they ...
