LINCOLNDALE, N.Y. — Somers’ softball team was in desperate need of a victory to stop a five-game losing streak and it found it by cruising past visiting Fox Lane 11-1 on Monday.

“It was a great win and amazing way to bounce back from three tough losses last week,” said sophomore catcher Gabby Mazzotta, a team captain. “Everyone contributed from top to bottom. I am very proud to be playing with all of these girls. They flushed last week's losses and came out strong. Our defense was especially strong today. It was just a good, solid brand of softball for Somers.”

Jazmyn Colon shined on the mound, tossing a complete game while scattering five hits and striking out two batters.

“Jaz is doing great,” Mazzotta said. “She wants to be in the circle and has pitched two great games in a row. I am excited for her. She has so much potential and is a great athlete. She wants the ball. If she pitches like this going forward, she will keep us in every game. She's focused and a big competitor. I enjoy catching her.”

Mazzotta and Tori Pagliaro starred at the plate as each of them blasted a home run.

Somers (2-5) will look to build off the win over Fox Lane as it hosts Lakeland on April 26 at 4:15 p.m. and heads to Rye for a 10 a.m. game on April 29.

“We are a better softball team than 2-5,” Mazzotta said. “All of the girls are bonding and playing united. This unity is what we needed.  This big win (over Fox Lane) is a great momentum builder. The chemistry is clicking and coach Scags (Dave Scagnelli) is the best coach in the section. He gets us going, motivates us and never gives up on us. I am fired up to be playing for him.”
