CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. — First-year coach Marq Mellor’s impact has been felt immediately on Somers’ field hockey team. The Tuskers improved to 3-0 in the Hudson Valley Summer Field Hockey League after a 2-1 win over John Jay-East Fishkill on Monday, July 17, at Walter Panas High School.
Erin Clark sparked Somers to the early 1-0 lead. Emma Kittredge added the second goal as the Tuskers took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
“I was able to score by being in a good position wide of the cage, with a great pass from my teammate Rosalie Murphy,” said Kittredge, a rising junior.
The Tuskers dominated possession in the first half, which aided them in getting out to a quick lead.
“We were able to come out with a strong start in the first half by maintaining possession,” Emma Kittredge said, “and having our defense quickly respond when they needed to get the ball up the field.”
The Patriots (1-2) answered with a second-half goal, but Somers was able to thwart their comeback chances behind goaltender Nicole Garrity (two saves) and a rock-solid defensive effort.
Somers squared off with Hendrick Hudson on July 19 and will face a tough test against Lakeland Green at 8 p.m. on Monday, July 24.
“Although we have had an undefeated start in the summer league, we are looking to build our skills as a team and also correct bad habits with the help of coach Mellor,” Kittredge said.
