SOMERS, N.Y. – Somers’ wrestling team returns four sectional qualifiers this season in senior Zach Lupinacci (152 pounds), senior Peter Kim (160), senior Thomas Gall (220) and junior A.J. D’Orazio (182). Gall and Lupinacci are the team’s co-captains.

Other key returners include juniors Robert Davidson (170) and Michael Rivera (220).

“I expect our three seniors, Zach, Peter and Thomas to lead the way,” Somers coach Ron DiSanto said. “They are focused, confident and aggressive wrestlers. They will see a lot of success. Our returning juniors, A.J., Robert and Michael, will step into full-time varsity roles and fill in the rest of our upper weights. We have a lot of experience from 152 and up.”

The Tuskers have an inexperienced team overall with three seniors, five juniors, 15 freshmen and two eighth-graders on the roster.

“We are obviously very young,” DiSanto said. “I expect our experienced middle to upper weights to provide a solid corps and set the tone. I expect some growing pains from our younger, light to middleweights. I believe many of our young guys are ready to make an impact on varsity and I cannot wait to see who steps up and how much they improve throughout the season.”

DiSanto is still figuring out who will be filling in those lower weights.

“From 99 to 145 (pounds), we have either freshman or eighth-graders,” he said. “They are all unproven but have a lot of potential. We will get them some JV experience and we need to have some wrestle-offs before we know who will make the varsity lineup.”

Somers also has four North Salem wrestlers on the team: freshman Carolyne Barrella, eighth-grader Dominic Barrella, freshman Nathaniel James and freshman Brian Ndreu.

The Tuskers were scheduled to open the season on Dec. 4, when they hosted the first two rounds of the Section 1 Dual Meet championships. They faced Byram Hills first with Roy C. Ketcham and Nyack on the other side of the bracket.
