Elements of Pen & Ink and Wash at Somers Library

Event Type: Adult Program
Date: 3/10/2017, 3/17/2017, 3/24/2017, 3/31/2017
Start Time: 12:30 PM
End Time: 2:30 PM

Description:

This four day workshop will focus on the traditional elements of pen & ink and its combination with wash. Black India and other waterproof inks are permanent in nature. This, together with the low cost and ease of reproduction, continue to make it a popular medium for commercial illustrations and architectural renderings.
Because the pen is essentially a linear tool, it can only delineate small areas that must be carefully planned. However, when combined with wash (diluted ink) or watercolor, it becomes tinted or painted drawing, capable of covering larger areas. Hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and wash will all be presented so that students may develop a personal style.

'That Sounds Like an Owl!'

Do you remember Ruthie’s Brigade? You are my family, dear friends and faithful readers who make up a much-needed support network when I do battle with my various medical issues. I haven’t written much lately about them, so I will share an update with you—you will then know as much as I do at this point!

As you know, I have atrial fibrillation (AFib) and am taking Eliquis. So ...

I Know When I'm Being Snowed

DON’T leave your house! If you do you will be swept away by a “bomb cyclone,” swallowed up by a polar vortex and spit out onto 125th Street, where you will be lost in white-out conditions before succumbing to black ice.

It all started two weeks ago, when we experienced a weather event so severe and so debilitating that I am just now emotionally able to write about it. Of ...

Regrets and Choices

We all have things we regret doing and not doing, and one of mine is leaving “Anatevka” in my old garage.

Back in 1974 at our theater, the Westchester Playhouse, we presented Paul Lipson in “Fiddler on the Roof.” Mr. Lipson had played Tevya, the role innovated by Zero Mostel, more than 1,800 times, 920 of which were on Broadway.

Ours was a smaller but very lavish ...

Time Management for Reaching New Year's Goals

As the year winds down just before New Year’s Eve, time seems to slow. Activities may be centered on the home and family and if you can plan it, you may have an hour or two to do some goal-setting for the year ahead. Judith, a colleague of mine, annually schedules a retreat on New Year’s weekend. It's great because it accomplishes two things: It allows her to measure where she has ...

Strategies for Test-Taking

Dear Dr. Linda,

Jenny, our smart, wonderful 10th grader, is in a state of panic because of her midterms. Last year, she did horribly on them and then she did just as poorly on her Regents and other finals. She did great in elementary school and middle school. She even does well in all her classes in high school, but scored in the 70s on last year’s midterms and finals.

The sad fact is ...

Talkin' 'Bout Our Generations

People try to put us d-down (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)

Just because we get around (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)

Things they do look awful c-c-cold (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)

I hope I die before I get old (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)

—Peter Townshend (The Who)

I’ve become obsessed of late with generations. Well, what ...

A Post-Apocalyptic House Cleaning

I’m usually pretty good about keeping track of what’s in my fridge. But over the course of a few weeks, the food containers seem to multiply and take over. By the time I get around to realizing that some items have been in there too long, the contents of the containers way in the back of the refrigerator either look like a science experiment gone awry or a refrigerated toupee.

This ...

Taxation Without Representation, or What Were You Thinking?

January 12, 2018

To the editor,

It looks like the Republican Party, the majority in the Congress but the minority in opinion polls after numerous losses, will legislate the tax reform (?) plan. Prior to the last local election, we warned you that a vote for the Republican Party was a vote for its values and agenda. How is that vote working for you now?

Now all New Yorkers, particularly those in towns like ...

Somers Lions: Who Are They, Exactly?

January 15, 2018

SOMERS, N.Y.-There are many myths surrounding the Somers Lions Club: “It’s an all-male club,” “a business networking group,” “an old men’s club,” “an event coordination group.” Let’s start by saying all of these suppositions could not be further from the truth.

The Somers Lions Club is a 52-year-old, all-volunteer organization ...
