Try DI Night

The local chapter of Destination Imagination, Inc. (DI) will be hosting a "Try DI Night" on Monday, December 16 from 7:00 - 8:30 PM at Somers Intermediate School!

DI is a global educational nonprofit dedicated to inspiring the next generation of innovators, leaders, and creative problem solvers. DI has more than 1 million alumni worldwide working for major companies like Google, Disney, SpaceX, ASPCA, and GE.

Student teams of two to seven members craft their solutions to one of seven project-based Challenge types—Technical, Scientific, Engineering, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Service Learning, and Early Learning —all without adult interference, meaning that every idea is kid-driven and kid-powered. Teams will present their solutions at our local tournament on March 14th in Ossining, New York. Top teams can qualify to advance to a state and global level.

So on December 16, get ready to try DI! Parents will get a crash course on what DI is and students will get to explore our spontaneous, short-term Instant Challenges. Parents and students interested in joining a team will be matched with other interested in parents and students in their area. This event is open to anyone in the area!

Feel free to email any questions to ddicicco@nydi.org. We can't wait to see you there!

Bonnie crosses the Bridge

“Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.  When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.” (Author unknown)

Before leaving for Florida a few weeks ago, I had to make a decision that all pet lovers dread:  I would be with my beautiful cat, Bonnie, as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Bonnie was ...

What’s the big idea?

I have seen the future, and I have to be honest, it’s kind of silly. In early January the city of Las Vegas hosted the annual Consumer Electronics Show. For $300 bucks you could attend the three days of seminars, exhibits and conferences designed to highlight the latest and the brightest innovations in the technology industry. There were 4,500 companies in attendance showing off everything ...

Finding a quadruped pal

The first cat to ever own us was called Fluffy. Baptized by our four year old daughter, Ilene, it was one of many stereotypical feline names we used over the years.  Ilene saw Fluffy in a pet shop window and it was love at first sight.  To me he looked like a skunk because of a white stripe running from head to tail.  So there we were, dog people, walking out of the store with a ...

Jeopardy’s G.O.A.T. goes deep

Watching the indomitable Ken Jennings virtually run away last week with the coveted title of “Greatest of All Time” on the Greatest Game Show of All Time, Jeopardy, got me to asking myself some questions.

Answer: He’s gone deep his whole life.

Question: How does Ken Jennings store so much knowledge about so many things in his head?

But first, let’s ...
