Yorktown Repair Cafe

Toss it? No way!  Repair Cafe is a free community event where we bring our beloved but broken items, and together, with volunteer Repair Coaches, we fix them!  Lamps, appliances, clothes, bikes, toys, crockery, wooden items, jewelry, computers / electronics... anything that is broken is welcome.  And can more than likely be repaired.

The Repair Café Coaches almost always have the know-how, and want to help you learn how to make simple repairs yourself.  In the Fellowship hall at Grace Lutheran Church at the corner of Curry and Gomer Streets in Yorktown, on Saturday, October 26 from 10AM and ending at 2PM, volunteer repair experts will be available to help people make all possible repairs free of charge.  Tools and materials will also be on hand.  Repair Café is also meant to put neighbors in touch with each other in a new way.  And to discover that a lot of know-how and practical skills can be found close to home.  The "Green Team" at Grace Lutheran Church and the Sierra Club - Lower Hudson Group are pleased to co-sponsor this free event, which is held quarterly in Yorktown on the last Saturday of the first month of each quarter.  Additional Yorktown Repair Café dates will be January 25, April 25, July 25 and October 31, 2020.

So many Thanksgivings over so many years.  This is my favorite time of the year and my favorite holiday when family comes together to love, laugh and enjoy a wonderful, stomach-bursting dinner.

My first Thanksgiving, as a young, newlywed was certainly memorable.  I was going to do much of the preparation the night before.  Of course Mom and my in-laws were contributing side ...

What are you so afraid of?

Is it a pumpkin? That big round orange thing with a goofy smile on its face? People voted for much the same thing for president before they knew how frightening it really was. What is so scary about pumpkins? The only thing scary about pumpkins is that someone might come along and try to make beer out of them. But there they are every Halloween, part of the American legend on an evening dedicated ...

Paying for kindness

My sister Nelle was shopping at one of her favorite discount stores recently.  One of Nelle’s mantras is “When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping”…even if it isn’t tough she enjoys puttering around and finding clothing she likes, taking them home for a second look, and bringing them back if they don’t work with the rest of her wardrobe.

On Stage: The Champagne of Jukebox Musicals

“An American in Paris,” on stage at Westchester Broadway Theatre in Elmsford (N.Y.) through Nov. 24, has the kind of purebred pedigree that would make a French poodle proud. (Ticket info: 914-592-2222; BroadwayTheatre.com).

This show’s resplendent roots reach back nearly a century to a jazz-infused symphony by George Gershwin that was the basis for a 1951 MGM movie musical ...

Don't be Enraged; be Informed

November 7, 2019

Last week, on Oct. 29, the New York State Assembly’s Committee on Health opened up the floor to discuss a bill that would bar children 12-and-under from playing tackle football.

The result, as expected, was hundreds of bare-bones articles slapped together in 10 minutes containing nothing but a few paragraphs and a headline (something like: “New York Considers Banning Tackle ...
