BALDWIN PLACE, N.Y. – Green’s Natural Foods is about to sprout in Somers.

CEO Peter Waldmann announced recently that the specialty retailer of natural/organic groceries and dietary supplements plans to open its newest store on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

It will be located at 57 Route 6 in Baldwin Place, just down the road from Somers Commons.

Headquartered in Mount Kisco, Green’s is closing its Yorktown store at the Triangle Shopping Center on Monday, Sept. 7. The new Route 6 location is at a crossroads between Mahopac, Somers and Yorktown. All its Yorktown staff will be coming to the larger Baldwin Place venue, and it is in the process of hiring an additional 10 employees.

Since the new spot is only 13 minutes away, Green’s thinks it shouldn’t be hard for its loyal Yorktown customers to follow as well.

“We are super excited. I believe that shopping local is the economic engine for the community,” Waldmann said.

More space means that Green’s will be able to increase the size of both its produce and dietary supplements departments.

Residential and commercial developments have been springing up all over the busy Route 6 corridor.

Green’s anticipates getting a lot of “walk-up” customers from The Mews and Avalon across the road, and from Crossroads at Baldwin Place, which is right behind its building.

Its other locations include Briarcliff Manor, Mount Kisco, and Eastchester.

While there will be no deli or spot to sit and eat, the Somers store will have many prepared “grab-and-go” goodies such as salads and sandwiches.

Green’s employees are following all the pandemic health rules, such as extra sanitation, handwashing, and mask- and glove-wearing. Customers must wear masks as well.

“We take our responsibility to the community’s safety seriously,” Waldmann said.

However, COVID-19 has, for now, put a damper on traditional “grand opening” events because of the crowds they might draw.

Green’s plans to celebrate instead by sending out postcards with discounts off dietary supplements, produce, and bulk foods.

Customers will be offered memberships in its “Loyalty Club” -- which gives them a price break on purchases.

It plans to launch an “e-commerce” site and curbside pickup sometime in October.

“We’re really excited to be in partnership with Mahopac, Somers, and Yorktown,” Waldmann said.

Foodie Facts

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because Green’s Natural Foods sprung to life as Mrs. Green’s.

The founders, Harold and June Hochberger, had a vision for a neighborhood health store that would appeal to a wider audience than those existing in the Woodstock era.

When the Hochbergers launched their business in 1992 in Scarsdale, Mrs. Green’s was the first of its kind in the area, the company said.

It had organic produce, a juice bar, and dietary supplements.

In 2017, Mrs. Green’s was acquired by Green’s Natural Foods, Inc. and underwent a restructuring and rebranding.

Currently, Green’s Natural Foods operates in Westchester County, but plans to open additional locations in New York and Connecticut.

Among the chain’s own commitments are to sell USDA certified organic produce and products that “are known to contain no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, sweeteners or hydrogenated oils.”

The shopping experience promised is “intimate, easy” and “never overwhelming.”

It makes good on that, it said, by emphasizing customer service, nutrition education and community outreach.

It is also committed to “providing healthy, natural and organic foods in underserved areas.”

Food “deserts,” or lack of places to get healthy food, is a subject that Waldmann is passionate about.

“Everyone deserves to eat right,” he said.

Meat and poultry products contain no antibiotics or “added hormones” and come in several different options: organic, grass-fed, and local.

It lists Albert’s and United Natural Foods as its primary vendors.

Albert’s, an organic produce distributor, delivers to nearly 7,000 stores around the U.S. and Canada.

Among the family-owned farms they deal with is Hidden Camp Farm in upstate Canajoharie.

In promotional materials, Green’s praised customers for their loyalty and said its doors are “open to anyone and everyone who is seeking delicious, nutritious food.”

At the said time, the chain said, it recognizes that “each individual is in a different place on their health journey, and we never judge.”

A typical Green’s customer shops “with a purpose – whether it be to heal their bodies with supplements through health challenges, or pack their child’s lunch box with gluten-free snacks,” it said.

“We will never be able to be everything to everyone, but we are a very important resource for the customers we serve. We operate as meaningful educators – and we love that!”
