Katonah, N.Y. - In a somber note to customers, the Katonah Reading Room announced its permanent closure on Friday, May 8.
Owners Pete and Gretchen Menzies said the fragile nature of the restaurant business combined with the devastating economic impacts of the pandemic forced the decision.
"Coronavirus destroyed the Katonah Reading Room. It was slow and brutal, a piercing of the heart, and it hurt more than you can imagine," the owners wrote on their website.
The couple went into detail about how they tried to weather the storm, applied for grants, made plans, but in the end couldn't make it work in the face of so many unknowns.
"We have to close the Reading Room," the Menzies wrote. "It can’t come back out of this catastrophe and be the same. It needs a rest, and it needs to weather this storm. We hope that Little Joe’s, our bookstore and coffee shop, will survive."
