The following is from the Somers Central School District:

As of right now, the state and county health departments continue to recommend that schools shut down only if there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 within a school. At this time, no one in our schools has tested positive for the virus. As a district, we are working to balance the health and safety of our staff, students, and families while maintaining a focused learning environment and preparing for the possibility of a long-term closure. We have decided to make Monday a full day of professional learning so teachers can continue to plan for distance learning.

This means no school for students on Monday. A reminder that tomorrow is also a PLC day and students do not have school.

Our buildings and grounds staff is following the New York State Department of Health guidelines for sanitizing our buildings.

To help slow the spread of the virus, we are following the guidelines provided by health officials regarding social distancing:

  • Schools are closing each evening at 6:30 p.m. Any events should be adjusted to end by then.
  • Field trips and large group gatherings during and after school hours are canceled until April 24.
  • Elementary school parent-teacher conferences, CSE, and 504 meetings will be conducted via phone.

We have heard many questions regarding lunch periods and spring sports.

Lunch

We are in constant contact with our district physician, who has advised us that since we are able to sanitize lunch rooms between periods, and at the high school students are spread throughout the building, our practices do not need change at this time.

Sports

Teams are currently practicing, not competing. We have closed the fitness center and are awaiting guidance from Section I regarding spring games, meets, and matches. Locker rooms are being sanitized daily.

I realize how much anxiety this situation is causing. If we can support your child in any way, please let us know. Here are some resources to help you talk with your child. Due to the uncertainty of whether schools might close, we ask that you remind your children to bring home their tablets and/or learning materials each day.

Thank you for your support as we continue to navigate this unprecedented situation.

Sincerely,

Dr. Raymond H. Blanch
