SOMERS, N.Y.— Somers’ 11-and-under team, the Red Storm, won the TYA Memorial Day baseball tournament. The Red Storm routed the New Castle Quakers, 12-0, in the championship game.

Leading the team to victory were Andrew Kapica (complete game shutout), Brady Leitner (two homers including a grand slam) and Eric Gersfeld (home run).

Senior Gets the Jump on His Competition

Somers senior Numan Maloney is a member of the Tuskers' track and field team.

How old were you when you started competing in track and field and how did you get started?

I first started track through the middle school modified program as a seventh-grader. Both of my sisters did track and I thought getting to run as fast as I could every day after school sounded like a lot of ...

Somers Trio Headed Back to States

SOMERS, N.Y.— When asked what the feeling is heading into their final state meet, Matt Fusco, Greg Fusco and Numan Maloney all had the same response: “It’s bittersweet.”

The senior trio qualified to compete at states, which take place June 8-9 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

“This might be my last time wearing Somers colors and representing this great ...

Fuscos Earn Top Finishes at Sectionals

SUFFERN, N.Y.— Mike Sokolofsky wanted more out of his team but Somers’ boys track and field coach understands that the Tuskers are forced to compete against schools that are nearly three times their size in terms of enrollment.

Somers ended up tied for sixth place at the Class A sectional meet on May 26 at Suffern Middle School.

“We certainly could have performed ...

Sitaras Climbs to Conference Title, Falls into Sectionals

SOMERS, N.Y.— Somers tennis star Nicolas Sitaras is used to winning matches fairly easily, and that trend continued in the conference championships held the week of May 13.

Sitaras, a senior, didn't even lose a set the whole way in competition at John Jay-Cross River High School. After receiving a first round bye, he bested John Jay-CR's Travis Laub, 6-2, 6-1, in the ...

Somers Can't Find the Magic in Playoff Loss

SOMERS, N.Y.— Somers’ softball team took a step in the right direction this season, earning a No. 7 seed in the Class A tournament and a home playoff game.

But the Tuskers picked a bad time to play possibly their worst game of the season, suffering a 13-3 loss at the hands of No. 10 Walter Panas Saturday in a Class A opening-round playoff game at the Primrose School in ...

Kennedy Stuns Two-Time Champ Holy Trinity in Double OT

SOMERS, N.Y. — Kennedy Catholic’s boys lacrosse team won its second New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association state title in the last four years last Thursday, and did it in dramatic fashion, upending two-time defending state champ Holy Trinity, 7-6, in a double overtime thriller.

It was these same Titans who beat Kennedy in the state final in each of the last two ...

Somers Trampled by Indians in Quarters

SOMERS, N.Y.— It was a six-goal deficit before seventh-seeded Somers could blink.

The Tuskers were never able to get in a groove in a 15-5 loss to second-seeded John Jay-Cross River in the Section 1 Class B quarterfinals on the road on Saturday, May 19.

Less than five minutes into the game, Indian Jenna Giardina sprinted in and scored to make it 4-0, prompting a Tusker ...
