SOMERS, N.Y. – Senior Emily Arena is co-captain of the Somers girls basketball team.
How old were you when you started playing running and what got you started?
I was 7 years old when I started playing basketball. I was encouraged to play by my parents because they wanted me to try a sport other than soccer. At first it was only for fun, but I quickly fell in love with the sport.
What is your favorite thing about being on the Somers basketball team?
My favorite about being on this team is how much of a family we all are. A lot of us have been playing together for a long time, we all love each other and have made a lot of great memories.
What are your individual and team goals for the rest of the season?
My individual goal for the rest of the season is to keep getting better and better every day at practice and every game. As a team, our main goal right now is to win a league championship and then we can focus on sectionals. Our focus is to continue to play as a team and to keep winning.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
My parents are my biggest role models. They have always supported me in everything that I’ve done.
As a captain, how do you view your role as a leader?
When I was an underclassman, I was fortunate to have great captains to look up to. Now as captain, I hope to help my teammates to feel supported and to encourage them to both work as a team and to be their best.
Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what are you planning on studying and why?
I want to study occupation therapy next year in college because it has always been an area of interest for me.
What music do you listen to before a meet?
I personally like to listen to my “game day” playlist. All the songs on it help get me excited for the game and ready to play.
Do you have any favorite pre- or post-game rituals you share with your teammates?
Every night before a game someone on our team hosts a team dinner where we eat and hang out. We always have so much fun as a team and the food is always really good.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I would definitely want to be able to teleport because I could travel anywhere I want instantly.
What is something about yourself people would be surprised to learn?
Since playing varsity basketball freshman year, I’ve gotten 20 stitches, had two broken noses, and a broken wrist.
What is your favorite place to visit on vacation and why?
I loved my vacation to the Bahamas. The beaches were too beautiful and I had a lot of fun with my friend that I traveled with.
What is your favorite place to eat locally?
I really like eating at Bobo’s Cafe. They had a lot of really good food and drinks. I especially like their smoothies.
What’s the go-to app on your phone and why?
Snapchat because I can talk to my friends on it and send funny pictures.
For a young athlete growing up in the Somers school district, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the basketball team and why should they go out for the team?
Playing basketball and being a part of this team has been one of the best experiences throughout high school. I have made so many great friends and amazing memories.
