SOMERS, N.Y. – Somers senior Alexis Atkinson is a three-year starter on defense for the girls soccer team. She is committed to Iona College, where she will continue her soccer career.
How old were you when you started playing soccer and how did you get started?
I was 6 years old when I started playing soccer when my parents signed me up for AYSO.
What are the team’s expectations for the upcoming soccer season?
As a team, we hope to grow and become stronger throughout the season. We are always looking to help each other and push one another every day to make sure we have a successful season.
As a senior on the team, how much do you value being a leader?
I have always looked up to the seniors for guidance and motivation and I hope I can do the same thing this season for the underclassmen.
What is your favorite team activity, pregame or postgame ritual that you share with your teammates?
My favorite team activity is going to team dinners after practice. They are always so much fun and I love bonding with my team off the field.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
My parents have always supported me and taught me to never give up no matter how hard the challenge is.
Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?
People wouldn’t expect it because of my personality, but I am very organized and always want everything in the right place.
Will you continue to play soccer in college?
Yes, I will be continuing to play soccer at Iona College. It had everything I wanted in a school and it felt right.
Who is your favorite professional athlete and pro or college sports team?
Julie Ertz and my favorite professional sports team is the Miami Dolphins.
What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a game?
Every game my teammate, Megan Dineen, and I always listen to “Magic in the Hamptons” and it always gets us ready for the game. And every away game the team and our coach, [Paul Saia], always sing “Piano Man” and “Only the Good Die Young.”
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
It would be teleportation so I could get to places instantly.
If you could pick one place to visit on vacation that you’ve never been to, where would you go and why?
I would visit Australia because I want to see the Great Barrier Reef.
What is your favorite food to eat before or after a game?
Before and after every game I definitely go to the fridge for some watermelon.

Definitely Bobo’s Cafe!

For a young athlete growing up in Somers, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the soccer program and why should they go out for the team?
Being part of the Somers soccer program has been a huge part of who I am. I have met some of my best friends being part of this team and the overall experience has been amazing. Always having teammates and coaches encouraging you has always been the reason for our overall success.
