SOMERS, N.Y. – Somers senior Evan Mazzola is a midfielder on the varsity soccer team. The Tuskers finished the regular season 14-1 and received the No. 3 seed in the Class A sectionals. Last season, Somers won the Section 1 Class A title and advanced all the way to the state championship game.
How old were you when you started playing soccer and how did you get started?
I started playing soccer once I was able to really kick a ball. My earliest memories are of me and my brothers playing soccer. My two older brothers taught me how to play.
What are the team’s goals for the rest of this season?
As we head into sectionals the team is very focused on taking the season one game at a time. We are hoping to build momentum throughout the section’s race like we did last year. Getting back to where we were last year is the goal.
As a senior on the team, how much do you value being a leader?
Being a leader on such a talented squad is a big commitment. The younger kids on the team look up to the seniors, so we try and set the best examples on and off the field.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
One of my biggest role models is actually my coach Brian Lanzetta. Brian knows my game. He’s seen me play since I was 5, and he knows my weaknesses. He taught me how to control my thoughts and keep a clear mind during the game, which is something that greatly increased my level of play.
Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?
I’m currently studying to get my real estate license. I meet all the requirements for a license once I turn 18, so I’m planning on taking my test shortly after.
Will you continue to play soccer in college? If yes, where are you going and why did you pick that school?
I am planning on playing soccer in college. Unfortunately, I don’t know where yet.
Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what and why?
I’m planning on majoring in real estate. My mom is a real estate agent, and watching her do her job for years I feel that it’s something I could be really successful at.
What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a game?
The warm up playlist is very interesting. First there’s a lot of rap by Kevin Gates, Meek Mill, and Lil Wayne. Followed by some EDM music. Then it’s all topped off with some Dean Martin classics,”A boy went back to Napoli.” There’s something about Dean Martin that gets me in the zone.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
It would have to be teleportation. Think about it. You could visit every college campus in one afternoon.
If you could pick one place to visit on vacation that you’ve never been to, where would you go and why?
I’ve always wanted to go to Iceland. I really like to travel and I’ve heard that Iceland is an amazing country to visit.
What is your favorite food to eat before or after a game?
Before a game I really like to eat cereal. I don’t know why. I just love Frosted Flakes.

For a young athlete growing up in Somers, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the soccer program and why should they go out for the team?
Being part of the soccer program throughout high school has been an amazing experience. The team is family in and out of school. We celebrate everybody’s success and we motivate each other to become better versions of ourselves. Being part of any sport, especially soccer, is definitely worthwhile and can lead to unforgettable memories.
