WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – Somers’ Colin Brooks became the fourth sophomore in program history to qualify for states with his sixth-place finish (17:24.3) in the Class B race at the Section 1 cross-country championships on Nov. 9, at Bowdoin Park.

“Colin Brooks making states as a 10th grader was a huge surprise,” said Somers boys coach Mike Lacko. “Colin was ranked 23rd in Class B coming into the race. I’ve told Colin all season you’re going to run under 17:30 at sectionals. I just know it. So, for him to place sixth in a loaded Class B race is something myself and him will never forget. I am so proud of Colin. We both knew he could run 17:24 and he just finally put it all together. I am just so proud of all of his hard work and dedication to this team.”

Brooks will compete at the state championship meet on Nov. 16 in Plattsburgh.

“The goal for Colin at states is top 20,” Lacko said. “The top 20 is a medal and he has a very good shot at getting a medal and breaking 17 minutes for the 5K.”

The Tuskers finished second as a team behind Pearl River.

“It felt amazing to get second on Saturday to a great Pearl River team,” Lacko said. “All season our team was ranked fifth in Class B and our kids knew they could run with Pearl River and have a shot to win. Leaving Bowdoin Park on Saturday…Yes, the team got second, but we left as champions. The boys left it all out there on Saturday and I can’t ask for anything else. I am so proud of all of them and this season was amazing and something special. I will never forget it.”

Nicola DeMarinis, a junior, was the second Tusker to finish, placing 15th in 18:01.2. Cole Willman (19th, 18:11.2), Matt Reimann (21st, 18:14.7), Peter MacNeil (23rd, 18:18.4), Thomas Parisi (33rd) and Joe Torre (34th) rounded out the top seven finishers.

The girls were led again by Gabriella Parisi, who finished 37th in a time of 23:09.4 in the Class B race. Katie Hill (53rd), Jordan Han (55th), Maeve Janecka (56th), Avni Madhwesh (57th), Katherine Olsen (61st) and Emma Murphy (63rd) were in the top seven runners for Somers.

“I thought the girls performed well at sectionals and ended the season on a good note,” Somers coach John Vegliante said. “We’re going to miss this senior group but I’m excited for the future as we return a solid corps of runners next year.”
