SOMERS, N.Y. – Somers tennis finished their regular season last week with a 9-4 record.

For the uninitiated, Somers plays 3/4 tennis (lower enrollment schools play 3/2). Every regular season contest involves seven matches between three individual players and four doubles teams from each school.

The key to victory, of course, is winning at least four of those matches.

Just about every week, Somers coach Frank Catania could count on his three singles players—Zoe Gutherman, Isabelle Monachelli, and Sabrina Cheung—to win three matches for his team.

“They probably only lost one match each the whole season,” Catania said.

On Friday, Oct. 11, Somers lost in the first round of the team sectional championships to eventual champion Scarsdale, but the season wasn’t over for Gutherman and Cheung, who were scheduled to play Tuesday (Oct. 15) in the first round of the individual conference tournament.

If they advance through the conference tournament, Gutherman and Cheung would move onto the section tournament, which is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Whatever the outcome, Catania is proud of his team’s performance this season, especially on a team with only four seniors: Isabella DeFeo (captain), Kaity McCartin (captain), Caitlan Van Tassell and Hannah Brownstein.

“I think it went a little better” than anticipated, Catania said.
