THORNWOOD, N.Y. – Somers senior Thomas Gall pinned Mahopac’s Londrim Hasanramaj in 3:09 to win a 220-pound wrestling divisional title and qualify for sectionals.
At the divisionals, held Feb. 8 at Westlake High School, the top-seeded Gall also pinned Dean Calco of Fox Lane in just 47 seconds in the semifinals.
“Thomas looked really sharp,” said Somers/North Salem coach Ron DiSanto. “Everything is coming together for him, mentally and physically. He has confidence and he executes his technique very well.”
Teammate Dominic Barrella, an eighth-grader at North Salem, battled through a partially torn pectoral muscle to place second and make sectionals. He pinned Roy C. Ketcham’s Alexander Rathbun with just 25 seconds left in the semifinal match.
“Dom’s semifinal match was one of the greatest moments I have ever seen in sports,” DiSanto said. “First, just to wrestle with a torn pec takes a lot of courage. And then to come from behind and win by pin is incredible. It was a very inspiring and emotional moment.”
Barrella forfeited the finals match for precautionary reasons, being he had already qualified for sectionals.
“I’d say he’s probable for sectionals,” DiSanto said when asked about Barrella’s status on Monday, Feb. 10. “He is going to take it easy the next few days and we will see how he feels later in the week as we get closer.”
Mike Rivera was the third member of Somers/North Salem’s team to qualify. He placed third at 220 pounds, pinning Calco in 1:24.
“Michael has been improving steadily and is peaking at the right time,” DiSanto said. “He has always been strong but now his instincts and technique are winning him more matches. After missing out on the chance to wrestle at divisionals last year due to injury, I am really happy that he was able to wrestle well and make it through to sectionals.”
The first day of the Division 1 sectionals takes place on Feb. 15 at Sleepy Hollow High School with day two scheduled for Feb. 16 at Clarkstown South.
“I’m expecting a lot of exciting wrestling,” DiSanto said. “The competition is higher at sectionals and we have the types of guys that rise to the occasion. It’s very mental in the postseason and it’s all about staying confident and calm under pressure.”
