PEAPACK NJ - The Arts Access Program at Matheny Medical & Educational Center is proud to announce that actress, comedian, and singer Shannon DeVido will serve as honorary chair for Full Circle: Conversations. The yearly event, which takes place November 5, 2016 from 3:00pm – 6:00pm at the Robert Schonhorn Arts Center, is a multi-media showcase featuring artists with developmental disabilities.
DeVido is excited about her participation in the event. “I love meeting new people who give all their heart to their work,” she said. “It’s inspiring and makes me want to continue to grow and push myself as an artist. All the work I’ve seen from Arts Access embodies that heart. I’m excited to be part of that for a few hours.”
A working artist for a number of years, DeVido has been featured on Law & Order: SVU, Sesame Street, What Would You Do?, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, and Comedy Central’s Delco Proper. On the theatre front, she has appeared in the productions Still More Parts at New York’s TBTB Theatre and Holiday Jubilee: Motown Review at Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick, among others. Never one to rest on her laurels, DeVido is also the creator of the Web series Stare at Shannon. Launched in 2012, the series follows her adventures and defies the conventional thinking about the lives of people with disabilities.
In existence for over two decades, the Arts Access Program provides its clients with a forum to express themselves through the performing and creative arts. Although the artists have limited use of their bodies, Arts Access moves past that obstacle by using professional artists as facilitators. The clients are assisted in multiple artistic disciplines, with the end results (fine art, dances, writings, and more) being the complete creation of the artists.
During Full Circle: Conversations, the artists’ talents will be highlighted in an inventive stage showcase. In addition to the performance, attendees can view a multi-media gallery exhibit that includes sculpture, acrylic paintings, and digital art.
DeVido offered these words of encouragement to the clients. “Continue to work hard and be proud of what you’re making,” she shared. “It’s important. If you love what you do, it’s going to shine through and inspire other people to follow their dreams. You’re amazing and bring something to this world that no one else can. Never forget that.”
Local vendors will provide food tastings and beverages. To purchase tickets, which are $50, visit events.matheny.org/FullCircle2016 or by calling (908) 234-0011 ext. 260. All proceeds will benefit the Arts Access Program.
