NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – Omar Perkins, 23, who was arrested just last Friday for possession of $50,000 of heroin, possession with the intent to distribute and possession of a hi-point 9mm handgun was released from jail today in accordance with the new bail reform regulations.

According to police officials, Perkins, an accused member of the G-Shine Bloods Gang, was ordered to be released by a Superior Court Judge in Middlesex County despite the objections from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. Perkins was arrested on January 20, 2017 on Astor Street in South Plainfield after a search warrant was executed which resulted in the seizure of over $50,000.00 worth of heroin and a Hi-Point 9mm handgun.

Perkins was charged with Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons, Possession of CDS with Intent to Distribute, Possession of CDS, Possession of a Weapon during a Drug Distribution Scheme, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

“Who drew up this law and why,” said South Plainfield resident Susan Krystopik. “Why would anybody want to let criminals back out on the street?”

This is the second high profile release of an accused criminal that South Plainfield police arrested only to have the Courts release the suspect in accordance with the new bail reform rules which began on January 1, 2017.

Last week Dawud Ward, 23, was caught and charged with burglarizing a residence on May Avenue in South Plainfield. Ward, was ordered released by a Superior Court Judge after just seven days in custody and despite the objections of the County Prosecutor. After Wards release he was arrested the very next day for burglarizing a Cranford residence.

“As evidenced by these cases, it is very obvious that the State needs to take a hard look at this new bail reform act and do something,” said South Plainfield Mayor Matthew P. Anesh.
