NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - The Bernards baseball team finally broke out.

A highly regarded team coming into the season, the Mountaineers lost their first seven games before erupting for 17 hits in a 16-7 victory over North Plainfield Saturday in the preliminary round of the Somerset County Tournament. Bernards is the 14th seed.

Bernards scored eight runs in the top of the first inning. Phil Mahlik led off the game with an inside-the-park home run and went 2 for 2 with two runs and three RBI. Kyle Levine was 4 for 5 with a double, two runs and three RBI. Ryan Falduto was 3 for 5 with a double, a run, and four RBI.

Eddie Gambelli was 2 for 3 with his first varsity home run and two runs scored. David Iaione was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. And James Kessler got his first varsity hit and drove in two runs for Bernards.
