BERNARDSVILLE, NJ - The Bernards baseball team closed out its season on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Rutgers Prep, winning by scores of 4-3 and 11-1.
In the Mountaineers' 4-3 victory, they scored three runs in the first inning and the other in the second. Jack Evleth went the distance for the win, striking out nine while walking two and surrendering six hits. A sac fly by Ryan Falduto and RBI singles by Tommy Hosbach and Kyle Levine gave Bernards an early lead. An RBI double by Phil Mahlik in the second, his second hit of the game, extended the lead to 4-0.
In the 11-1 win, Phil Barrett and Matt Oliver had three hits apiece and two runs scored. Evleth had two hits, one his first career home run, a two-run shot in the fourth, and scored two runs. Robbie Holmes also had two hits, a double, a run, and three RBI. Kyle Levine had two hits, a run and an RBI. Senior Justin Frank singled and scored the run that led to the mercy-rule win. Winning pitcher Tommy Hosbach gave up just two hits over three innings of work, striking out one and walking two.
Andrew Holmes and Matt Oliver each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game, and Bernards' season.
