Bernards Track Stars Shine at County Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Bernards High School Indoor Track and Field teams traveled to Lehigh University for the Somerset County Championships. Several Mountaineers came away with hardware with strong performances in the first big meet of the season.

The boys hurdles tandem of Sean Sullivan and Dan Mayer took third and fifth in the county. Senior Sean Sullivan finished third with a time of 8.48 seconds in the Boys 55 meter hurdles. His teammate, junior Dan Mayer finished fifth at 8.57 seconds.

The boys distance team scored points in the 1,600 meter run and 3,200 meter run.  Senior Richard Gruters finished fourth in the 1,600 meter run at 4:36.97.  Gruters and his brother Stuart, a sophomore, finished on the podium in the 3,200 meter run.  Stuart Gruters finshed second in the 3,200, two strides away from a county championship, less than a half second behind the first place finisher.  Richard wasn't far behind at 10:10.28.

Stuart Gruters, Sean Sullivan and Dan Mayer returned to the track for the 1,600 meter relay.  Together with teammate Amar Bindra, the team finished sixth in the county with t time of 3:58.17.

The indoor track teams will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 9 when they compete in the Hispanic Games at the New York Armory.
