BERNARDSVILLE, NJ -- The borough has introduced a resolution to establish an ad hoc Downtown Redevelopment Committee with the purpose of advising and assisting the  mayor and council on the upcoming revitalization project in the center of town.

A New Jersey statute, the Municipal Land Use Law states that a mayor "may appoint one or more persons as a citizens’ advisory committee to assist or collaborate with the Planning Board in its duties, but such person or persons shall have no power to vote or take other action required of the board. Such person or persons shall serve at the pleasure of the mayor.”

The new committee would be entrusted with providing input on the creation of zoning and design standards to be incorporated into any redevelopment plans or zoning ordinances, an overall vision of the redevelopment project and uses that would be either permitted or prohibited downtown.

Mayor Mary Jane Canose and Borough Council President John Donahue both would be members of the Bernardsville Downtown Redevelopment  Committee, and  Mayor  Canose would appoint  to the committe a combination of Planning Board members, another council member, Borough Administrator Ralph A. Maresca Jr., a professional planner, a counselor to Bernardsville on redevelopment, and members of the business community and the public.

The members of the ad hoc committee would serve until the next Reorganizational Meeting of the Borough Council.

The borough is in the process of reviewing proposals that were received last summer from three development groups bidding to spearhead the overhaul of the Quimby Lane area of downtown Bernardsville: Advance Realty, AST and the tandem of Melillo Equities and Claremont Development.

A decision on which developer Bernardsville will go with is expected later in 2020.
