BERNARDSVILLE, NJ -- Users of the turf field at the Polo Grounds off Seney Drive will not be required to pay a fee in 2020.
Under considerable pressure from residents and local sports organizations, the Bernardsville Borough Council adopted a resolution Monday night to waive the fees for the rest of this year.
"We've been asked to provide temporary relief," said Bernardsville Councilman Jeffrey Hammond. "If (Somerset) County comes back and says we can't do that, we'll reconsider it. Let's grant the immediate relief and then move on."
The $55 per hour fee has been a point of contention, with some who object to it saying that other public assets in the borough do not charge a fee for usage.
"I don't think ...initiating fees for our children to play sports anywhere in the town is reasonable," Councilwoman Jena McCredie said.
All six council members present at the meeting approved the resolution.
"Worst case scenario, the county comes back and says we have to do it by ordinance instead," Mayor Mary Jane Canose said.
