NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ — The Bernards boys soccer team remained undefeated with a 6-1 victory over North Plainfield Wednesday afternoon on the road.
Drew Elliott scored two goals for the Mountaineers (2-0), who had a 2-0 lead at the half before pulling away after halftime. It was actually a 1-0 game until under two minutes were left in the opening half.
On a set piece, Duncan Burke accepted a pass from Hernan Godoy-Vera and headed it past the North Plainfield goalie into the net from less than 10 yards away to give Bernards a 2-0 lead. Burke had narrowly missed scoring a goal just a minute before when his shot hit the crossbar. Burke finished with an assist to go with his one goal.
Gilberto Ferreira also finished with one goal and one assist, and Sean Doran and Aubrey Firestone each scored a goal for Bernards. Nico Botti, Will Luik, Godoy-Vera and JJ Zaun each provided an assist.
Bernards outshot North Plainfield, 14-4. Bernards goalie Elliot Dietrich was credited with six saves. Chris Pasteur's goal in the second half for North Plainfield was the first goal against Bernards this season.
