BASKING RIDGE, NJ - If you are a high school student with time off from school on Spring break, plan some college visits. During your break, visit colleges that are in session. Sign up, if needed, for a tour, an information session, and to sit in on a class.  Take notes and photos to capture your college visit.

  • For seniors, visit or re-visit schools you have been accepted to (or are waiting to hear from). Include an overnight stay, if possible.
  • For juniors, who have a list of colleges they are considering, pick a school that is on your list.
  • For students who don't yet know what schools they are considering, use a visit to a nearby college to help you understand college characteristics better (e.g., whether you like big or small schools, whether you like city schools or schools in the suburbs, to see how you feel about a large lecture).

The National Survey For Student Engagement (NSSE) provides a great, free guide entitled  A Pocket Guide to Choosing a College: Questions to ask on your college visits,to choosing a college that you can use when you are visiting colleges.  NSSE collects information from thousands of students at hundreds of colleges through a 4-page survey. Responses to the survey provide information about the quality of their college experience. Some colleges provide their NSSE results to prospective students, if asked or post results on their Web site. If the colleges you are considering share their results, you can learn a lot about the college by reviewing them.
