BERNARDSVILLE, NJ — The Bernards football team broke out to a 39-point halftime lead on its way to a 39-14 victory over A.L. Johnson of Clark on Senior Night in the rain Monday at Olcott Field.
The Mountaineers scored five touchdowns in the opening half, which also featured a field goal by Steven Lopez.
Senior quarterback Teddy Gouldin scored on a 20-yard keeper and Lopez kicked the extra point to get the onslaught started, giving Bernards a 7-0 lead. A touchdown run by Mike Leanza and a two-point conversion catch by Gordon Brienza gave Bernards a 15-0 lead. Gouldin's 3-yard TD run boosted the lead to 22-0.
Lopez connected on a 28-yard field goal and Gavin Chieff recovered an ALJ fumble in the end zone for the final Bernards TD and a 39-0 halftime lead. Chieff also caught a TD pass from Gouldin covering 51 yards.
Gouldin completed three of five passes for 104 yards and gained 45 yards on four carries. Leanza gained 52 yards on eight carries.
Bernards (1-1) is scheduled to play at home Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Gov. Livingston of Berkeley Heights.
