ROSELLE, NJ — Patrick Caldwell scored three touchdowns and Jake Caldwell, his freshman brother, scored two to help Bernards build a big lead on its way to a 42-20 victory over Roselle on Saturday.
After the Mountaineers (3-1) scored on a Gordon Brienza TD run to cap their opening drive of the game, they put the game out of reach with a huge second quarter sparked by some momentum-changing defensive plays.
With 1:50 left in the first quarter, AJ Mino intercepted a Roselle pass to set Bernards up with a first down near midfield. On the next play, Teddy Gouldin threw a bomb to a wide open Patrick Caldwell deep down the right side for a 48-yard TD followed by Steven Lopez' extra point to give Bernards a 14-0 lead.
Brady Walsh and Charles Puccinelli combined on a sack to thwart Roselle's next possession and force the Rams to punt. With 11:07 left in the second quarter, Jake Caldwell took a pitch and ran 52 yards for a TD to extend the lead to 21-0.
Gavin Chieff's sack short-circuited Roselle's next series, and the Mountaineers' next drive culminated in a 3-yard TD pass from Gouldin to Jake Caldwell, who caught the ball in the right flat and maneuvered into the end zone with 1:33 left.
The 28-0 lead would have seemed comfortably sufficient for Bernards going into the half, but the Mountaineers got more after Puccinelli recovered a Roselle fumble with 1:11 left. A couple of plays later, Gouldin found Pat Caldwell for a 31-yard TD pass with 53 seconds left. Caldwell leaped high in the end zone to snare the pass, and Lopez followed with the 100th extra point of his career.
Bernards extended its lead to 42-0 on another 50-yard TD run by Patrick Caldwell in the third quarter. Roselle (0-3) scored three TDs in the fourth quarter.
The Mountaineers will host Monmouth Regional next Friday at 7 p.m.
