SOMERSET HILLS, NJ _ The usual parades and flag ceremonies for Memorial Day were put on hold due to COVID-19 in 2020, but Basking Ridge-based Heartworks reached out in other ways to area veterans.
Heartworks and VFW 7658 each Memorial Day have been serving a barbeque dinner in honor of Marine Capt. Stanford "Ford" Henry Shaw III of Basking Ridge, who was killed in a military training helicopter crash in 2015.
This year, Heartworks _ a group dedicated to performing arts of kindness _ teamed up with Minuteman Smokehouse & Grill of Morristown to prepare and deliver 42 barbeque dinners for area veterans.
"When Ford’s parents attended a flag ceremony after his death, we wanted to create something so that his family knew he would always be remembered," the group said. "Each year Heartworks and Post 7858 has an end of the week barbecue because it was Ford’s favorite meal. This year we are delivering BBQ to Ford’s family and men in the post. We are all together in spirit honoring the life of this United States hero," Heartworks said on its Facebook page.
Scott and Marti Lifschin, owners of The Minute Man restaurant, lovingly prepared the 42 dinners for local VFW members, that were delivered to the veterans by Heartworkers.
