Highly Seeded Bernards Track Teams Head to Sectionals

SOMERSET HILLS NJ - The Bernards High Indoor Track and Field Teams will compete in the NJSIAA North II, Group 2 sectional championships tomorrow at the Bennett Indoor Athletic Center in Toms River.  The Bennett Center, the hub of indoor track in New Jersey, is known as "The Bubble" because of its shape.  When they enter "The Bubble", the Mounties should feel right at home because they bring with them a tradition of individual and team sectional championships there.

This year promises more sectional success because many of the Bernards athletes rank at or near the top of their events.

Seniors Ava Cummings and Alyssa Frausto will lead the distance team into the meet.  Frausto is the top seed in the 1600 meter run.  The pair are seeded third and fourth in the 800, and fifth and sixth in the 3200.

The Mounties are likely to score important points in the field events.  Defending pole vault champion Francesca Porambo is the top seed in the vault with a season-best 12 feet.  Sophomore Francesca Morales is seeded fourth in the high jump at 4 feet 10 inches.

Boys Team

The Boys dynamic distance duo of Senior Connor Roehr and Junior Stuart Gruters are favored to score big points for the team.  To score points, a competitor must finish in the top sixth in the event.  In the 1600 meter run, Roehr is seeded 3rd and Gruters 4th based on this year's indoor times.  In the 800, Gruters is the top seed and Roehr is seeded 4th.  In the 3200, Roehr is seeded fourth and Gruters fifth.

In the 55 meter hurdles, Senior Dan Mayer is coming off of a school record 8.00 last week in Staten Island.  Mayer's school record time puts him in the hunt for a sectional championship.  He is seeded third in the event.

Senior Connor Tamke is also in the hunt for a sectional title.  Tamke's best jump of six feet in the high jump earns him a third seed.
