RIDGEWOOD, NJ -- In the current episode of HomeGrown, Host Stephanie Willoughby met with Glenn Carlough, Co-Owner of Steel Wheel Tavern, located just steps from the Ridgewood Train Station. The establishment recently celebrated their three year anniversary and regularly hosts community events, live music and a dance party every Saturday.

Being so close to the train station has inspired its name, and the location serves the tavern well. “The name Steel Wheel is not an accident,” said Carlough. “Being across from the train tracks is a great spot. The train provides a tremendous advertising opportunity for us, day in and day out.”

Steel Wheel Tavern is housed in a building dating from the late 1800s, which has been extensively renovated. Besides a wide range of cocktails, craft beers, and a sizable wine list, the tavern serves popular favorites, like burgers and sandwiches, as well as more elevated dishes like mahi-mahi and locally-sourced poultry.

“The shops and businesses are different than some of the more industrial towns around us,” said Carlough. “You find more along the lines of the Mom and Pop places here, like we are--we’re not a chain. And so many businesses in Ridgewood are just like that, independently owned and operated,” he added. “I think it gives Ridgewood a little bit of a different flair. It’s an escape for someone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle.”

Steel Wheel Tavern often holds fundraising nights for the benefit of charitable organizations, sports teams, or local clubs to give back to the community. “I think of Ridgewood as a little bit of a throwback,” Carlough said. If you come here for the tree lighting, it’s like Small Town USA. And we’re in Bergen County, we’re 10 miles from New York City. This is not Small Town USA. But, Ridgewood has the ability to sort of transform itself into that type of feel where you can really see the community coming together.”
