WASHINGTON, D.C. - As it became clear that Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster was one of President Trump's favorite destinations, it also became clear to local officials in Somerset County and in the Somerset Hills that providing security and traffic control could break the bank.   Those worries sould now be in the rear view mirror.

Congressman Leonard Lance today announced his office has received confirmation from the United States Secret Service that Bedminster has been designated a priority for presidential protection – allowing law enforcement and other protection-related costs eligible for reimbursement by the federal government.

“Somerset County Prosecutor Robertson and the excellent law enforcement personnel in New Jersey have a tremendous duty: assisting the Secret Service in protecting the President and keeping residents safe during President Trump’s visits to New Jersey. I believe the additional law enforcement expenses are a federal responsibility and I will continue to seek parity for Bedminster and Somerset County,” said Lance, the federal representative for Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.

Lance previously announced that the U.S. Department of Justice is permitting New Jersey, New York and Florida to apply for funding related to the protection of President Trump during the presidential transition.  Since taking office, President Trump has made a number of trips to the Trump National Golf Club, prompting the heavy involvement of local law enforcement.  With this new designation, Bedminster is now considered a ‘residence of the President’ and will be eligible to apply to receive federal grants exclusively for providing reimbursement of law enforcement personnel costs for protection activities.  Lance secured funds for the program through a recent government funding measure.

Bedminster Mayor Steve Parker has played an active role in the pursuit of federal reimbursement to Bedminster.  He was pleased with today's news.

"On behalf of the Bedminster taxpayers, I want to thank Congressman Leonard Lance for securing federal funding and Secret Service priority designation for Bedminster Township.  I believe many Bedminster residents are flattered that the President loves Bedminster as much as we do, and are proud that Bedminster has provided a safe and secure environment for his visits.  We have been working with Congressman Lance since November to ensure that our taxpayers would not bear an extraordinary financial burden for the President's visits.  We knew we could count on Congressman Lance and he delivered for his constituents!"
