New Year's Day Traffic Stop Leads to Seizure of 28 Pounds of Weed

SOMERVILLE, NJ - A New Year's Day traffic stop led to the arrest of a California man, and the seizure of approximately 28 pounds of marijuana and more than $10,000 in cash, Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Roberston said in a news release Tuesday. 

Juan Rodriguez, age 37, of Sacramento, California was pulled over in his 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Liberty Corner Road in Warren Township, Jan. 1 at approximately 2:05 a.m., according to law officials. 

The officer detected "a strong odor of raw marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle," according to law officials.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 28 pounds of marijuana and about $10,500 cash, according to law officials. 

Robertson stated Rodriguez was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance and possession of marijuana over 50 grams.

Rodriquez was processed and held in the Somerset County Jail.
