NEWARK, NJ - Sentencing for former Bloomfield Councilman Elias Chalet is postponed to April 9.
Bloomfield Councilman Elias Chalet pleaded guilty to one count in connection with his bribery case in May 9, 2017. The state dismissed four counts because they could not be proven. Chalet also handed over a $15,000 check to the court.
Chalet was indicted by a grand jury on January 29, 2016 for allegedly soliciting a $15,000 bribe. At the time, he was formally accused of promising a business owner that he would use his place on the Bloomfield Township Council to ensure that Bloomfield would continue its planned purchase of a commercial property.
Chalet maintained his council seat representing the First Ward of Bloomfield throughout the case. At the time of the guilty plea he gave up his council seat thru forfeiture. His term was to expire tat the end of 2017. Jenny Mundell was appointed to fill out the rest of Chalet's term. Mundell won reelection in November 2017.
